MLA Style Guide and the Proper Use of Uppercase Letter Abbreviations
The Modern Language Association is one of the commonly used language guides in the world today. Students in the social sciences, humanities and arts are known to use this guide quite a lot when they are working on their dissertation projects. There are two sources that can be used for learning how abbreviations need to be used in academic writing. The first is chapter 7 of the MLA Handbooks for Writers of Research Papers. It would be a good idea to use the 7th edition of this manual. The second source is from the 3rd edition of the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. Chapter 8 gives a good idea of how abbreviations are to be used. These guides can either be purchased from a good bookshop that sells academic books or they can be found online.
One of the aspects that the style guide helps with is the use of uppercase letter abbreviations. The guide tells you that periods and spaces in abbreviations that are composed entirely of capital letters are not to be used. This can only be done in the case of proper names. For instance the name of the country US can be used. The students can also write CD or DVD. The initials of people can also be used with full capital letters. For instance the P and the D in P.D. James are always in capital letters.
Putting abbreviations is a very small activity, but it is an important one. It is also where the students are likely to make plenty of mistakes inadvertently. So it is essential that they read the content carefully and ensure that they get the style correct.
